Nomination

As you know (or maybe already have suspected): I work as a guide at the Zeeuws Museum (which means "Museum of Zeeland") in Middelburg (The Netherlands).

Located in the former Abbey of Middelburg, it is a surprisingly modern museum. It has got the necessary amount of history (it's a museum!), but also with a healthy connection to the present, and if ever possible even with the future in mind. 

Today we got the message that the Zeeuws Museum has been nominated to win the Museum-Price!

This year's category is "The museum that tells the story of a place or region in the most attractive way, and which appeals to a broad audience".

Well, today I would like you all to vote for the Zeeuws Museum!
 It is not because it is my WORK, or  because I LIKE MUSEUMS, or because I LOVE ZEELAND...

it is because it is a

fantastic museum

with attractive programmes for all ages, great and unique historic features, and that little extra, the "wink" to the present and to the future!

(and, of course, because I love Zeeland, and I like museums, and I am happy to work there!)  :-)

So, dear readers all over the world: please vote for the Zeeuws Museum!

A New Year

First of all, A Happy New Year of 2015 to all of you!
May your year be full of happiness and warmth, love and kindness, and may you be in good spirits all year long!

Do you believe that there is something like "coincidence"?
Well, I don't. Sometimes there are thing that are just supposed to happen.
Remember the cochenille last summer?  It is the blog post I just published, it was still in concept...:-(

Dyeing yarn is so addictive!
And it makes you go on, and try new stuff...

As there is a prospect of getting a piece of land in a public gardening project, my silent wish for 2015 was to get some dye plants. Well, silent? I told the Ravelry community...
Top of my list is madder, a plant that had been a luxury trading good from Zeeland for centuries before synthetic dyes were invented. Do you know old paintings of soldiers in uniform? The red of the soldiers' uniforms probably is created with madder.

This time I was working at the museum. The lady wore a marvelous, obviously hand knitted stola-scarf. We met lateron in the Café, and we had a most inspiring chat about handwork and designing and Ravelry. (Maybe later this year there will be a moment when the results of this chat will be published)
We exchanged mail adresses, and Ravelry nicknames.  In her next mail she told me that she has not only madder in her garden, but all kinds of dye plants with lots of great shades that makes you smile: indigo, woad...  the next time I'm in the neighborhood we'll meet!

We did so, and she handed me not only a bag with plants from her garden, but also seeds of all plants which give a colour. A whole rainbow. And a whole library with tips for the "how to" and soy beans to make a lovely "snack from own soil".  It seems that I like some "out of the box" stuff...
Yes, I do!

And I can't wait for the spring to come!

Leap of Faith

Last year I was happy to meet very nice people in Jeanet's shop.
They had some information for the local museum, which - unfortunately - was closed that day.
And, the friendly man was interested in some wool for weaving, and so we talked about the one or other thing...
He told me that he once experimented with dyeing with natural dyes, cochenille being one of them.
But he didn't do that any more, to much fuzz.
Oh, how much would I like to try that kind of fuzz!
He said that somewhere in the attic there might be a little leftover, and if he finds it he'd send it. Make my day!

But, unfortunately, no message from him any more.

Until last summer.  One morning Jeanet called. There were people looking for me, from Germany.  I dashed to her shop, and, indeed, there were the people from Germany again.
Out of a beautifully woven bag a small jar was conjured, with the lovely little dried lice.
The man had found the jar in the attic, but he had second thoughts about sending it: it would have to pass customs somewhere, and it is animal material, and he did not want it to be picked out and be confiscated to be destroyed. That sounds sensibel!

Well - said so - the jar became mine!  :-)

Now the research was started! The internet and an old book on spinning and dyeing I could thrive for the necessary mordants. Which is not so easy, as you don't want to be suspected of planning to extinguish your family... Grey haired old ladies can't be trusted!

So, here we start. A smelly business, but you don't have to stick your nose in it. ;-)
The next step: Put it in a saucepan with some water and let it boil. Tip: put a lid on, it is still a smelly business!
Now it is decision time: play it safe with a skein of wool, or dare and use three skeins of merino-silk?

The three beautiful skeins were prepared. One hour, 70°C, and then slowly cool down in the mordant solution. Done!
In the meantime a check on my dye.  Still smelly. And some black stuff floating on the surface. It must be the "tar" the books were talking about. "Remove all of it, carefully", because you don't want any of it to ruin your wool.  Okay - done!

Now another mordant has to be added. And ...  my dye turns dark orange!!!
NO!!! I  DO  NOT  WANT THAT!!! 

Double check with a piece of kitchen towel. Yes. It is dark orange. But..........
With a few drops of the wool mordant the colour of the paper changes!
Oh! THAT'S A KIND OF MAGIC!

If that is going to happen to the wool...
The wool has to be rinsed first. And then into the dye. Simmer, nice and slow.
Dye one, dye two, dye three... cool down overnight.
Rinse. Hope for good weather.

And then:

Waarom niet?

Wie me een beetje kent weet, dat ik me niet graag aan patronen (of recepten) hou.

Of, als ik iets ga uitproberen, dat er een of ander kleinigheidje vervangen, weggelaten, of toegevoegd wordt.  Soms lukt het, en soms lukt ook niet, en soms maak ik het me zelf ook flink lastig met mijn ideeën.  

En soms wil ik ook gewoon zelf iets verzinnen. 

Hoewel... soms denk ik ook dat op het gebied van handwerk alles ooit een keer bedacht is en dat het niet nodig is om het wiel opnieuw uit te vinden. 

Want heel vaak betekent een "nieuw patroon" alleen maar, dat oude (of vergeten) patronen, vormen en handigheidjes op een slimme en vernieuwde manier opnieuw gecombineerd en met nieuwe materialen verwerkt worden. 

Hier wil ik een paar handigheidjes en basis-patronen voor eigen brei-avonturen verzamelen.

Bij het breien van het patroon voor de Nomad's Compass heb ik kennis mogen maken met Elizabeth Zimmermann en haar kijk op de brei-wereld.  Zij houdt van simpel, maar met een groot effect. 
Liefst niet averecht. Liefst geen (zichtbare) naden.
De wiskunde bij de berekening van de diameter / omtrek van een cirkel heeft haar geïnspireerd tot de "pi-shawl".  Je breit in het rond, maar zonder ingewikkelde berekeningen en zonder constant steken te tellen. Dat werkt ook voor de "half-pi shawl" - maar dan niet in het rond.

"I-cord" is ook zo een handigheidje. de "I" staat voor "idiot" - omdat het zo idioot eenvoudig is en een simpele en mooie manier is om een randje te maken. Hier is een filmpje hoe je daarmee netjes kunt afkanten. En wat ook leuk is: dit i-cord kan je ook langs de zijkanten van je breiwerk meebreien. Dan heb je niet zo een krul-effect als je tricot-steek breit. Hoe? Aan de rechter- en linkerkant van je breiwerk 3 steken meer opzetten (dit zijn dus 2 x 3 "kantsteken"). Altijd aan het einde van de naald deze drie steken niet breien, maar de draad naar de naar jou toewijzende kant brengen. Voor je werk, dus. Dan keren. en dan deze drie steken altijd recht breien. Niet te strak, gewoon eerst een beetje oefenen.

Om zelf iets te ontwerpen is het verstandig om eerst voor een basis-vorm te kiezen. De wereld bestaat niet alleen uit driehoeken en vierkanten! Bij Laylock heb ik twee "cheat-sheets" voor omslagdoeken gevonden, de basisvormen  en de vanuit het midden gebreide basisvormen .  Als je de link volgt kom je bij de pdf bestanden die kunt opslaan of uitprinten. Er is duidelijk aangegeven hoe vaak en op welke punten je moet meerderen, om tot de gewenste basis-vorm te komen.

Dan kan je met de vanuit het midden gebreide basisvormen nog verder gaan... met behulp van een Turkse of Oosterse opzet  kan je ook een ovaal of rechthoek vanuit het midden breien.
Stel je dit eens voor met een garen met een lang kleurverloop... of een lang kleurverloop in combinatie met een effen kleur...

Vakantie!

Af en toe moeten we gewon een dagje vakantie in ons eigen land nemen.
Of "blaumachen" (een dagje "spijbelen", een woord uit de tijd waar met indigo blauw geverfd werd en de kleurstof een dag nodig had om in het katoen te gaan hechten en de verver niets anders kon doen dan wachten...) Voor mij is blauw nergens zo mooi als bij ons in Zeeland!

Dochterlief was haar identiteitskaart kwijtgeraakt. Maar gelukkig belde op de volgende dag al de gemeente dat hij gevonden was, en dat wij - desgewenst - de id-kaart rechtstreeks bij het Topshuis op Neeltje Jans mogen ophalen. En daaraan hebben we dan meteen ons vakantiedagje gebreid en zijn we eerst via de Zeelandbrug naar Ouwerkerk vertrokken, want we hadden nog nooit het Watersnoodmuseum  bezocht.
Onderweg hebben we rustig de tijd genomen voor foto's. En dochterlief vond de oude "nifty fifty" zooo spannend... hoe werkt dat toch? En waar kan je zien of de foto goed is? (volgende week, als de foto afgedrukt is, schatje! ;-)  )

Het Watersnoodmuseum herinnert aan de watersnoodramp op 1 Februari 1953. Een stuk geschiedenis waar iedereen gewoon stil van wordt. 

In deze installatie worden de verhalen van de slachtoffers verteld, de namen van de mensen "vloeien" als het ware als een eindeloze stroom. 

Maar er is ook ruimte voor kunst. Op dit moment is in de wisselexpositie werk van Claudy Jongstra te zien:

"Meekrap Rood 'Tapies' "  Wol, zijde, vilt en traditionele verftechniek: ik werd er helemaal vrolijk van! 

Na een kleine ijs-pauze en de inkoop van postkaarten en eigen postzegels van het Watersnoodmuseum nog een idee gevonden:

Hoe je van waterflessen een windmolen kunt up-cyclen! Simpel en leuk!

En dan verder richting Neeltje Jans, want dat moeten we natuurlijk ook nog doen! 

Dank en complimenten aan de vinder van de id-kaart en de beveiliging van het Topshuis! 

Bij thuiskomst wachtte al een officieel bericht van de politie op ons dat de id-kaart gevonden was. 

Wat een geweldige burgerservice!  :-)
